Worth every single penny. Bought these for my mom because she was struggling to see small needle eyes, even with her reading glasses. Watching her frustration vanish instantly was amazing. I would easily pay 10x the cost just to see her this happy doing what she loves again.
FAQs
Below are answers to some frequently asked questions.
What are the best sewing needles for low vision, macular degeneration, arthritis, or hand tremors?
Traditional needle eyes require a level of fine motor control and sharp vision that can make sewing deeply frustrating if you are managing low vision, macular degeneration, arthritis, or hand tremors.
The Spiral Eye® is widely considered the best easy-to-thread needle because it completely eliminates the "poke and hope" method. Our patented side-threading design allows you to simply slide your thread down the side of the shaft until you hear and feel the "Perfect Click." It safely locks the thread inside the eye, allowing you to maintain your independence and keep doing the crafts you love without the physical strain.
I have arthritis or difficulty holding onto a needle, what are my options?
If you struggle with arthritis, hand tremors, or grip strength, smaller needles can easily slip out of your fingers and cause hand fatigue. We highly recommend choosing a longer, thicker needle which gives you more surface area to hold onto.
Our Spiral Eye® size 4 Sharp or size 22 Chenille needles are excellent options. They provide a heavier, sturdier grip that is much easier to control, while still offering the effortless side-threading design so you don't have to pinch or strain your hands to get started.
What if my hands get irritated when I sew, or I'm allergic to nickel?
If your fingers itch, peel, or turn red when you sew, you are likely experiencing a reaction to the nickel plating found on most traditional needles.
To prevent skin irritation, you should switch to a hypoallergenic needle. Our premium Spiral Eye® needles and our exclusive STAINLESS traditional-eye needles are crafted from 100% surgical-grade stainless steel with absolutely zero nickel plating. They resist rust, protect your skin, and let you sew comfortably for hours, without irritation.
Can I use a Spiral Eye needle for cross-stitch and embroidery?
Absolutely! For counted-thread work, we highly recommend our Spiral Eye® Tapestry Needles (such as the size 24).
Unlike standard embroidery needles, these feature a blunt tapestry tip that smoothly glides through the existing holes in Aida cloth, linen, or canvas without splitting the fabric fibers. Because they utilize our patented side-loading eye, you can re-thread your embroidery floss in a split second—allowing you to keep your creative flow going completely free of eye strain.
Can Spiral Eye® needles be used on a sewing machine?
While our signature Spiral Eye® line is primarily engineered for effortless hand-sewing, we do offer specialized Spiral Eye® Sewing Machine Needles! They feature the same patented side-threading technology, making it incredibly easy to thread your sewing machine without eye strain or tweezers.
What is the strongest needle for sewing denim, canvas, or thick fabrics?
For heavy-duty projects like denim, canvas, or upholstery, you need a durable needle that can pierce tough layers without bending or snapping.
Our Spiral Eye® size 4 Sharp is specifically engineered for these high-tension tasks. Crafted in America from premium surgical-grade stainless steel, it is significantly stronger than standard nickel-plated needles. It gives you the structural strength required for thick fabrics while providing our signature, effortless side-threading design.
How do I choose the right needle size for my project?
Choosing the right needle depends on your fabric weight and the thickness of your thread. To make finding your perfect match effortless, we’ve created a complete breakdown. Check out our How to Select a Needle Guide to see our size chart and recommendations for quilting, mending, embroidery, and more.
What size thread can I use with a Spiral Eye® needle?
You can use a wide variety of threads! Our finer Sharps work beautifully with standard sewing threads, machine threads, and fine silks. Our Tapestry and Chenille needles feature larger side-slots designed specifically for heavier materials like embroidery floss, pearl cotton, and knitting yarn. As a general rule, if the thread fits a traditional needle of the same size, it will easily click into our side-threading version.
Will leaving a needle in my sewing project for a long time ruin the fabric?
Yes, if you are using traditional needles. Standard nickel-plated needles will absorb moisture from the air over time, causing them to rust and leave permanent, ugly brown stains on your fabric.
To safely leave needles in your work for long periods, you should always use surgical-grade stainless steel needles. Our premium Spiral Eye® needles and our exclusive STAINLESS traditional-eye needles are 100% rust-proof. They will never corrode, stain, or harm your fabrics, no matter how long your project takes to finish.
Are these "self-threading" needles different from the ones I see in big-box stores?
Yes, significantly. Most cheap "self-threading" needles you find in big-box stores feature an open, V-shaped slot right at the top of the needle. Because the top remains open, your thread constantly slips out mid-stitch, and the sharp metal edges easily catch, fray, and shred your thread.
Spiral Eye® needles are engineered entirely differently. Our patented side-threading slot channels your thread down into a fully enclosed, secure loop with a distinct "stop bump." Once your thread clicks into place, it physically cannot pop back out while you sew, protecting delicate fibers and eliminating the frustration entirely.
Are Spiral Eye® needles made in America?
Yes! Pam’s original Spiral Eye® side-threading needles are the only hand-sewing needles proudly manufactured right here in the United States. We are a small, family-run business where Mom owns the company, her son and daughter-in-law run the shop, and the family dog answers the door.
(Note: Our economical Sew Right line is manufactured overseas to offer a budget-friendly alternative, but our signature Spiral Eye® line is 100% American-made!)
Do you really need an easy-to-thread needle?
If your vision and dexterity allow you to use a traditional needle without frustration, you might be perfectly happy with our high-quality PONY traditional-eye needles.
However, Spiral Eye® needles offer benefits beyond just easy threading—their patented design is engineered to protect delicate threads from friction, fraying, and shredding as you work. Crafting should be a source of relaxation, not a test of patience. Life is complicated enough; making your threading effortless simply lets you focus on the joy of creating.
